I am happy to tell you that the documentary film about our workshop in Argentina has been selected by the "I Festival de Cine Solidario de Granada", from the 11 to 15 of May. It will be projected in the Sala Val del Omar of the "Filmoteca de Andalucía", on 6, Profesor Sainz Cantero Street, (Granada), on Friday the 15th of May at 10 pm.
La fotografía como medio para explorar la realidad que nos rodea y expresar las emociones que nos provoca. “A través de la fotografía puedo mostrar a niños de otros países cómo vivimos y sentimos acá”, dice Stefi, una niña de 11 años, residente en Villa Cornú, barrio a las afueras de la ciudad de Córdoba (Argentina), quien fue miembro del taller de fotografía social que durante el mes de octubre impartí en El Vagón, nombre con el que se conoce al Centro Comunitario en el que se desarrollan todo tipo de talleres para niños con edades comprendidas entre 6 y 14 años. El Vagón, http://www.elvagon.org.ar es también el nombre de la organización no gubernamental sin ánimo de lucro que, desde 1991, trabaja en este barrio marginal, desarrollando proyectos de educación no formal, con el fin de mejorar las condiciones de vida de sus habitantes más jóvenes. Con ayuda estatal e internacional (a través de entidades españolas, entre otras), el Centro LúdicoEl Vagón trabaja con niños en edad escolar, cubriendo sus necesidades desde tres pilares fundamentales: la alimentación, ofreciéndoles una merienda reforzada que contribuye a paliar sus deficiencias alimentarias; el apoyo escolar, trabajando conjuntamente con la escuela del barrio; y el desarrollo de la creatividad a través del juego, por medio de talleres de teatro, manualidades y, en esta ocasión, de fotografía. ....................................................................................................................................................................
Photography as a means to explore our surrounding reality and to express the emotions which it evokes.
"Using photography I can show children of other countries how we live and what we feel here" says Stefi, an 11 year old girl who lives in Villa Cornú, a suburb of Córdoba (Argentina). Stefi was a member of the social photography workshop that I gave at El Vagón during the month of October. El Vagón is the name by which the Community Centre, which hosts all sorts of workshops for children between the ages of 6 and 14 years, is known.
El Vagón, http://www.elvagon.org.ar is also the name of a non- profit, non -governmental organization which, since 1991, works in this marginal suburb, developing projects in non -official education with a view to improving the living conditions of its youngest inhabitants. With state and international support (from Spanish institutions, among others) the Centro Lúdico El Vagón works with children of school age covering their needs in three main areas: Nourishment, offering them a stengthening meal which helps to mitigate their nutritional deficiencies; educational help, working jointly with the local school, and the development of creativity, through games, theatre workshops, crafts, and, in this case, photography.

Mi experiencia en Villa Cornú ha sido más un aprendizaje humano que docente. Las condiciones desfavorables en las que viven algunos de esos chicos no son un impedimento para sus ganas de aprender y de mostrar al mundo quiénes son, cómo viven, qué sienten... y la cámara fotográfica fue el instrumento ideal con el que expresar todas sus vivencias y ayudarles a reflexionar sobre la sociedad que les rodea, de una forma creativa e integradora.
I have experienced my stay at Villa Cornú more as an enriching human experience than as a teaching assignment. The unfavorable conditions in which some of these children live are not a hindrance for their desire to learn and to show the world who they are, how they live, and what they feel...and the camera is an ideal instrument with which to express all their experiences, helping them to reflect on their surrounding society in a creative and integrating manner.

In the photography workshop, in addition to learning about the technical functioning of the camera and the process of development of black and white photography in the traditional manner, "photo-marathons" are scheduled to boost their creativity, stimulate their self-esteem and interaction with their surroundings. The result is an education in values with the goal of attaining an awareness of social disparity from the perspective of a personality built upon inquiry, tolerance, solidarity and egalitarianism.

El Proyecto CAMARAdas utiliza la fotografía como elemento de comunicación de la realidad cotidiana, entre niños pertenecientes a diferentes culturas. Para ello, se imparte el mismo taller en localidades de otros países, con niños de la misma edad (de 10 a 13 años). Se trata de que reflexionen y muestren su mundo, exteriorizando sentimientos e ideales y abriendo un cauce de comunicación sin fronteras, pues a través de sus fotografías su universo cotidiano será compartido por otros niños, con otras realidades, con quienes, seguramente, tendrán muchas más cosas en común que diferencias.
COMUNICACIÓN INTERCULTURAL
En la sociedad plural en que vivimos la comunicación intercultural ha pasado a convertirse en la vía necesaria para el conocimiento y la relación de los distintos grupos de individuos pertenecientes a diferentes culturas. Por ello, los medios de comunicación adquieren una importancia crucial, soportando la responsabilidad de transmitir una información circunscrita en los valores éticos, típicos de una sociedad democrática, igualitaria y libre de toda manipulación. El mal uso de estos medios puede hacer mucho daño ya que éstos, no sólo transmiten información, sino que tienen el poder de crear opinión.
Dentro de la comunicación en general, la imagen tiene un peso relevante, llegado al punto en el cual un hecho no es noticia hasta el momento en que tiene una imagen que mostrar (tanto en fotografía, como en vídeo) a través de medios como televisión, prensa o Internet. También en la vida cotidiana la imagen cobra protagonismo, y al ser un lenguaje universal, se convierte en el instrumento de comunicación por excelencia, capaz de atravesar fronteras y de ser comprendido por todos los ciudadanos del mundo que tengan ojos para ver y conocimiento para leer entre sus líneas, incluso aunque estos ciudadanos sean analfabetos de otros lenguajes. De tal manera, la fotografía juega un papel imprescindible en la actividad política, social y cultural de los habitantes de un país.
Extrapolando todo esto al entramado social que se teje en los pequeños barrios de las sociedades desfavorecidas, tendremos como resultado un proyecto de comunicación socio-cultural basado en la experiencia comunitaria de sus protagonistas, que se transforma en un verdadero documento social, idóneo para traspasar las fronteras geográficas, sociales y culturales. Se trata de desarrollar los procesos de identidad humana por medio de la imagen fotográfica.
El protagonismo que adquieren actualmente los estereotipos producidos por los Mass Media (tanto verbales como gráficos), convierte estas representaciones en la única realidad posible desde nuestra mirada mediatizada, según los intereses político-económicos del momento. Pero esta “realidad” estereotipada no se basa en una experiencia directa sino en el desconocimiento de “el otro”. Necesitamos crear un extranjero diferente al que hacer depositario de nuestras inseguridades, nuestros miedos y nuestros prejuicios. Ante esta situación podemos adoptar actitudes antagónicas: a) “Los consideramos ajenos, son “los otros”, ignoramos o no entendemos sus circunstancias”. b) “Negamos su diferencia, les atribuimos nuestros valores, intentamos homogeneizar y reducir al otro a nuestra idiosincrasia”. ¿No es mejor probar a establecer un diálogo en el que nadie tiene la última palabra, donde uno no es mejor que el otro? ¿Qué ocurre cuando somos capaces de convertirnos en ese “otro”, cuando aceptamos que es, dentro de su diferencia, igual a nosotros mismos? Las diferencias entonces se nos revelan como una oportunidad para lograr relaciones más ricas, para ampliar nuestros puntos de mira, para crecer…
LOOKING AT THE WORLD THROUGH A CAMERA The CAMARAdas Project uses photography to show the daily life of children from different cultures, opening borderless communication. We do the same workshop in different countries, to children between 10 and 13 years old. The idea is to encourage the children to think about the daily lives of children from other parts of the world, thus exteriorising their feelings, ideals, longings and concerns, opening up a new communication and cooperation path capable of crossing borders, as their photographs will travel between countries and continents, and will be shared with other children from other places, with whom they will probably share far more similarities than differences.
INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION In the diverse society in which we live, communication has become essential for gaining access to knowledge and to establish a relationship between groups from different cultures. Accordingly, the media have become crucially important, for they are responsible for the dissemination of information circumscribed by ethical values, typical of a society which is democratic, egalitarian and free from any kind of manipulation. The inappropriate use of the media can cause a great deal of damage, since they not only provide us with information, but also have the power to influence opinion.
Within the general field of communication, images are important since an event does not become news until it is represented by an image (either photographic or video footage), on media such as TV, the press and the Internet. In the same way, in everyday life, images have acquired importance, and, as they make up a universal language, and have become the communication tool par excellence, one which is capable of crossing borders, and of being understood and grasped by everyone in the world who can see them and read between their lines, even if some are illiterate in other languages.
Therefore, photography plays an essential role in the political, social and cultural activities of the citizens of a country. By extrapolating this to the social network woven in the small neighbourhoods of deprived societies, we give rise to a social-cultural communication project based on its protagonists experience as a community, which is transformed into a true social document, one which is ideally suited to overcome geographic, social and cultural borders, by means of the processes of human identity which emerge with photographic images.
The current importance of the stereotypes created by the mass media (both words and pictures), renders these representations the only possible reality from the point of view of our mediated gaze, in accordance with the political-economic interests of the day. But this stereotyped “reality” is based not on direct experience but on the lack of understanding of “the other”. We need to create an outsider who is different from us, in order invest him with our insecurities, fears and prejudices. In this situation, we can adopt antagonistic attitudes: a) “We see them as outsiders, as ‘the others’, and we are unaware of, or do not understand, their circumstances”. b) “We deny their differences, assign them our values, and attempt to homogenise them, to reduce them to our own idiosyncrasy”. Would it not be better to attempt to establish a dialogue where nobody has the last word, where nobody is better than anyone else? What happens when we are capable of becoming that “other”, when we accept that he lives within us, and that, despite all the differences between us, he is the same as us? The differences between us thus become a chance to establish richer relationships, to widen our perspectives, to grow, etc.
